Crucial big data project for the European Space Agency
The EO IPT Project is one of the largest space undertakings ever commissioned to Polish entities by the European Space Agency. It is also a crucial big data project of ESA in the field of high resolution optical observation.
Participants of the tender proceeding organized by ESA faced two difficult technical problems - one is the huge amount of data that come from the Earth observation satellites. That is data from satellites such as Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2 or Sentinel-3, which were built within the frames of the Copernicus project. The satellites take pictures in many colour bands, perform radar scanning – non-stop, 24/7 thus producing enormous amounts of data. Upon the project duration (from 21 to 36 months) from 6 to 10 PT of data will need to be received and stored in a usable manner.
The huge amount of data is a significant problem and its processing constitutes another difficult issue. Solving the problem required application of a modern and flexible system of cloud processing. A solution was needed which allows simultaneous use of hundreds of cores, terabytes of RAM, as well as effective management over it by the end user.
The largest computing cloud in Poland - more than 2 000 TB until today
Within the frames of the European Space Agency project EO Innovative Platform Testbed Poland (EO IPT) a vast repository of Earth observation data gathered by satellites from all over the world has been built in Poland. Polish consortium of CloudFerro and Creotech Instruments together with a German company Brockmann Consult has built an infrastructure and is responsible for providing services enabling commercial and scientific users to obtain and process satellite data.
The database infrastructure is accompanied by virtual and bare-metal computing servers where the commercial and scientific users can run dedicated applications.
Within the frames of the project CloudFerro and its partners have built an enormous repository of satellite data – right now there is about 1 800 TB (1,8 PB) of data available to its users. This is complete data from the whole period of operation and from the whole world obtained by satellites Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, Envisat, Landsat-2, Landsat-5, Landsat-7 and the so-called ESA/Landsat-8, and selected data from Sentinel-1 radar satellite.
The data is processed by computing cloud which at present has: 1 000 virtual cor , 5 TB RAM, 150 TB of dedicated disk space.
Both the disk resources for EO satellite data and the computing resources will grow rapidl as the project is pushed forward.
EO Cloud Platform is available to all recipients in Europe
The European Space Agency (ESA) as the key recipient ensures usage of a considerable part of the platform for the next 2 or 3 years. Meanwhile, the CloudFerro EO Cloud platform is open to all other users both from Poland and the rest of Euro .
The platform is available at a fee, however, members of the scientific community are treated preferentially. Companies providing commercial services of processing data from the satellites will be able to use a dedicated system operating on the basis of the CloudFerro EO Cloud infrastructure.
CloudFerro EO Cloud is the basic tool for processing satellite data for the users in this part of the world.

Creotech Instruments S.A. (CTI) is a Polish company which since 2008 has been executing projects connected to research and exploration of space, as well as delivering sub assemblies and specialist equipment for the most up-to-date and technologically advanced research institutions. Among them are the European Organization for Nuclear Research CERN in Geneva, the Centre for Heavy Ion Research GSI and the Research Center DESY in Germany, the Space Research Center PAN and Warsaw University of Technology.
